Intro to Islam

Objective:
  • HHG Tributes of 2019 describe Muhammad and the origins of Islam.










Step 1 | DO NOW
Make a copy of Today's notes and complete the Do Now questions in 3-5 full and detailed sentences. No TMNT. Then, read through today’s key points and fill in the blanks.

"For the west, much of the history of Islam has been obscured behind a veil of fear and misunderstanding."

Step 2 | Key Points

Key Points:

1. "Islam" means "Peace through the submission to God."

2. People who follow the teachings of Islam are called Muslims. The word "Muslim" translates to "anyone or anything that submits itself to the will of God".

3) 25% of the world is Muslim. Along with Judaism and Christianity, it is considered to be one of the three Abrahamic traditions (descended from the prophet Abraham) are often referred to as "People of the Book."

4) Muhammad is considered "The Seal of the Prophet," the last prophet God will send with his expectations for how people should live. Muhammad preached faith in one God and the values of compassion, honesty, and justice.

Step 3| Partner Notes on the Life of Muhammad
Use the powerpoint to fill in the blanks about the Life of Muhammad. If your partner does not have a laptop, please share the notes with him/her when you are finished.


Step 4 | Evolution of Islam: Based on what you know about Muhammad and his life, create a copy of the flow chart and arrange the events in the order of the founding of Islam.

Step 5 | Muhammad and Character Strengths
Where in Muhammad's life do you see him embodying the character strengths of KIPP? Write down details about where you see these strengths in your class notes.
