Mythbusters: The Founding of Rome

Standard 6.7.1: Identify the location and describe the rise of the Roman Republic, including the importance of such mythical and historical figures as Aenas, Romulus and Remus, Cincinnatus, Julius Caesar, and Cicero.

SS Objective: The HHG Tributes of 2018 will be able to summarize the myth of the founding of Rome and compare the myth to the reality of the founding of Rome.

Step 1: DO NOW

  1. What three continents did Rome eventually come to control?
  2. How do you think empires, cities, or countries start?
  3. What causes a country to conquer other countries?

  • Use correct spelling and grammar. You need to use complete sentences.
  • If you are having trouble with the second question, try to think about yourself as a ruler. Why might you want more territory? There is no right or wrong answer to this question-- we are just brainstorming ideas!
Step 2: Discuss our responses to the DO NOW.

Step 3: Read the Legend of Rome’s Founding. As you read, you will consider the following questions:

  • Who raised Romulus and Remus?
  • Who was Romulus's and Remus's father?
  • It says there was another version of the story. How is this possible? Isn't the past just the past, and what happened, happened?
Step 4: The Story of Romulus & Remus... in song.

Step 5: Exit Slip

Homework:
1. Watch this video, The Etruscans: The Legacy of Rome's Founding. You will find the reality of Rome's founding is much different than its Legend!
2. Read and annotate Reading | The Etruscans: The True Origins of Rome
