Romulus & Remus vs. The Etruscans


Standard 6.7.1: Identify the location and describe the rise of the Roman Republic...

SS Objective: The HHG Tributes of 2018 will be able to identify major areas of the Roman Empire and compare and contrast the the Legend of the founding of Rome with the Etruscan reality of the founding of Rome.


Today's Handout

Step 1: Do Now | What are three things you learned about the Etruscan civilization?
  • Be specific and write complete sentences.
  • Explain your answer with details from last night's reading and the video.
  • No TMNT

Step 2: Using the map of Italy below, what geographical features do you notice in Italy? Draw them into your map.

  • Why do you think these features would be advantageous (an advantage) for Rome
  • Label the important geographical features on the map-- ie moutnains, rivers, seas. (Use symbols and make a key! For example, triangles could be mountains.)
  • Why do you think these features would be advantageous (an advantage) to Rome?

Step 3: Using last night's homework to work independently on your class notes for today.

Step 4: Now that you have studied the mythical founding of Rome and learned about the true Etruscan origins of the city, fill in the Venn diagram to compare and contrast the two versions. 
Remember that the center is for what the Legend of Rome and The Real Etruscan Story of Rome has in common. Example:

Homework: Reminder- You have a Skills Assessment on Monday. It will include what we have learned about Rome this week, as well as geography and timelines. You will need to be able to identify the continents and major bodies of water on a blank map of the world, as well as Italy, Spain, Greece, Gaul, Britain, Egypt and the Mediterranean sea on a map depicting the Roman Empire at its height
