The Fall of Rome (Part 1)

Standards:
7.1.1 Study the early strengths and lasting contributions of Rome... and its ultimate internal weaknesses (e.g., rise of autonomous military powers within the empire, undermining of citizenship by the growth of corruption and slavery, lack of education, and distribution of news).
7.1.2. Discuss the geographic borders of the empire at its height and the factors that threatened its territorial cohesion.

SS Objective: The HHG Tributes 2018 will be able to discuss the factors that weakened the Roman Empire and ultimately lead to its fall.

Step 1: Do now: What is a cause and what is an effect? Give an example of a cause/effect relationship from this past weekend. Be clear about what the cause is and what the effect is.

For example: "Cause: This weekend I went hiking and rock climbed 8 waterfalls in the Eaton Canyon. Effect: My abs and legs are sore."

Step 3: Read this handout. In your own words, summarize the three main reasons for the fall of the Roman Empire in the comments section of today's lesson.

Step 4: Choose one of the weaknesses of the Roman Empire to discuss with your partner. Be prepared to share your ideas with the class.

Step 4: What caused the fall of Rome?
Together we will color code the boxes into Economic(money)/Social, Military, and political factors of the fall of the Roman Empire. Then, you will cut out and arrange the boxes to show the cause and effects of these factors. Finally, you will glue them in the correct order on your colored sheet of paper. You may work with your shoulder partners. (Voice level 2.)

Step 5: Exit Slip | You may use any of the resources I have given you links to (readings & videos) to answer these questions about Rome. Please complete the form individually
